Thesis Statement

The main influence of my work is the color of my skin. Being a black/brown body I had to come into myself in ways not everyone has experienced. Growing up I never noticed or paid attention to the internal racism that I was exposed to. Now that I am older and currently in adulthood I have a clearer understanding of how institutional and structural racism have affected me. I wanted to challenge myself with this work and create a ballet. Ballet is something that I have done all my life, but never had the chance to actually choreograph one. I did tons of research on choreographers such as Alonzo King, Wayne McGregor, and William Forsythe. All three of those choreographers shaped the way I am thinking of my body of work. This work takes place in a black box theater and the performance garage space. I picked these places because while dreaming about my thesis, I saw a constant dramatic switch between the three environments. Wild as Wind will show the liberation and celebration of a black body, but also the pain and struggle we endure to become this powerful being.
